Types Of Scroll Saw Blades: Part 1

When it comes to choosing which type of scroll saw blade to install on your scroll saw, there are a variety of choices. Here, I will outline the major types of scroll saw blades and in which situation to use each one.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

Scroll saw blades come in two major types: pin end and plain end. The plain-end is a type of blade that is completely flat and is pinched in place between the jaws of small clamps on the scroll saw. The pin-end has a tiny cross pin in each end. The main difference between the two types of blades is the cross pin. The plain end blades are five inches long, will fit almost all types of scroll saws and are more widely available.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

There are several types of plain end blades:

1. Standard Tooth

On standard tooth blades, the teeth have identical sizes and are evenly spread out. Wood blades and metals blades are the two major types. Larger teeth and larger spaces between the teeth are found on wood blades. The design is intended to clear sawdust as one makes cuts. On the contrary, metal blades have much smaller teeth and fewer spaces between teeth. Some can find these to be a bit noisy.

2. Skip-tooth

Skip-tooth blades and standard tooth blades are quite similar. The one thing that distinguishes the two is that with the skip-tooth every other tooth is missing. The gullet, the space between the teeth, is wider and this also helps to keep the blade cool. Most prefer these types of blades. These types of blades are also recommended for newbie scroller sawers.

3. Double-tooth

The double-tooth blade is similar to the skip-tooth blade but the double-tooth has a bigger gullet between two teeth sets. The double-tooth types can produce a very smooth cut; however they can cut a bit slower.

4. Reverse Skip-tooth

The reverse skip-tooth blade is identical to the skip-tooth blade; however the teeth that are found at end of the bottom row point up. When working with plywood and for preventing tear-out splintering at the bottom of the cut, the reverse-skip tooth blade will work very well.

One must remember that when working with a reverse skip-tooth blade one must set the blade in a specific manner. When the saw arm is in its highest position, the blade should be set in the clamps so there are only two to three teeth that are protruding above the table top. If you are not able to do this, you might have to take a little bit off from the bottom of the blade.

Tips On Using The Makita BSS610 Cordless Circular Saw

A circular saw is one of those "must have" tools for most homeowners and for every do-it-yourselfer. It will save you a lot time and effort and easily handle cutting projects that you wouldn't want to tackle with a hand saw. The Makita BSS610 is one of the most highly regarded of the cordless circular saws. Here are a few tips and reminders on using this saw.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

1. When cutting small wood pieces be sure and secure them (e.g., with clamps) to the saw horse or other cutting support that you are using before you begin cutting. This will help you make a straighter and safer cut.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

2. If your saw blade begins to bind (or if you are stopping your saw in the middle of a cut for any reason), release the saw's trigger and do not attempt to remove the saw until the blade has completely stopped moving. If you try and remove the saw before the blade has completely stopped, a saw "kickback" may occur.

3. Keep your saw's blade clean. You can use kerosene, gum remover, or hot water to clean the blade. Never use gasoline! IMPORTANT: Make sure that you have removed the battery from the saw before beginning to remove and clean the saw blade.

4. A circular saw is designed to cut only in a straight line. If you try cutting in other than a straight line, the saw blade will bind or possibly cause a "kickback". Borrow a jig saw, if you need to perform curved cutting.

5. When cutting large wood sheets (e.g., 4' X 8' pieces of plywood), make sure that the wood piece is fully supported so there will be no sag in the wood sheet during your cut. If the wood piece is allowed to sag, your saw will almost certainly bind.

6. Always cut with both hands firmly grasping the saw - one hand on the front grip and one hand on the rear handle.

7. Always remove the battery from the saw before changing a saw blade. After you have removed the old blade (and before installing the new blade), make use of the opportunity to clean out the sawdust and other cutting debris from the upper and lower blade guards. Sawdust/debris has a tendency to accumulate in those two places. Also, when putting on the new saw blade, make sure that the blade's teeth are pointed toward the front of the saw.

8. Like with any saw, never force the cut. Let the saw do the work! Slowly push the circular saw forward as the saw blade cuts the wood.

9. It is prudent to wear a dust mask, ear protection, and safety glasses whenever you are using a circular saw.

10. When adjusting the depth of the saw's cut, set the cut depth so that only a single tooth of the blade is showing below the piece of wood you are cutting.

I hope these tips and reminders will help!

Do You Know How To Measure A Chain Saw Blade And Chain?

Is your chainsaw starting to seem dull and not perform as well? Looks like it's time to replace the chain. In order to do this, you will need to know the length of both the chainsaw blade as well as the length and size of your chain. If you've checked out the manufacturers' charts, they might seem a little overwhelming. But it really is pretty simple once you understand what's involved in the length of the blade and chainsaw chain.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

When you're ready to replace your chain, the first thing to do is determine the size of your chainsaw bar. If you happen to have an Oregon chainsaw, this should be easy. Just check the first two numbers of the ten-digit model number that is stamped on the motor end of the blade. That's your chainsaw bar length.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

Don't have an Oregon chainsaw that easily shows you the length of the blade? Then here are some tips for figuring it out yourself.

What's The Best Way To Measure A Chain Saw Blade?

To measure the chainsaw blade itself is simple enough to do. Just put your measuring tape at the end of the bar up against the casing and measure straight down the bar all the way to the tip of the blade.

Blade and bar are two terms that are both used to indicate the same item. This is the blade that extends from the casing of the motor and carries the chain which is what does the sawing for you.

Manufacturers were kind enough to standardize the chainsaw blade lengths into two-inch increments. The most common sizes are 16, 18, and 20 inches although the full range goes from 10 to 42 inches! When you measure your blade, round up to the nearest 2-inch measurement if needed.

Measuring A Chainsaw Chain

To measure the chain on your chainsaw, there are two things you will need to know ... the number of drive links and the pitch of the chain.

A drive link is simply a tooth on the chain and your chain's length is determined by the number of drive links (or teeth). The pitch of the chain also affects the size of the drive links.

The pitch of the chain is important to know as it must match the pitch of both the drive sprocket as well as the bar nose sprocket. This should be stamped on the drive link but if you need to measure the pitch yourself, take the distance between any 3 rivets of the chain and divide by 2.

As an example, a 1/4" pitch chain might have 52 drive links and be 2.17 feet in length, while a 3/8" pitch with 52 drive links would be 3.18 feet in length. So the pitch affects the drive link size which affects your blade's length.

Still unsure? Just check with your chain saw's manufacturer or anyone who makes chains and they will be able to clear up any confusion you may have.

High-Alternating-Top-Bevel Teeth offer Versatility and Clean Finishes
This thin-kerf blade's 60-tooth high-alternating-top-bevel (Hi-ATB) configuration features a large number of small teeth that face both left and right--a setup that ensures clean crosscuts and splinter-free finishes, even when working with hard-to-handle materials like laminates. This setup paired with Freud's anti-vibration technology results in cuts so smooth that they eliminate the need for a stabilizer or a scoring blade.

This blade is designed for optimal performance when cutting materials that are 1/4 to 1-5/8 inches thick, including hard- and softwood, chipboard, plywood, laminates, and melamine. The blade can also handle ripping wood, and it can tackle thinner or thicker materials. However, some loss of surface finish may occur when it is used outside its ideal range. It has a 5/8-inch arbor and produces a 0.079 kerf.

Well-Balanced, Anti-Vibration Design
This Freud blade is precision balanced and pretensioned for truer cuts under heavy loads. It also features laser-cut, anti-vibration slots that reduce chatter for a cleaner finish, longer blade life, and reduced noise while you work--a feature that's especially important when working with plywood or laminates. And because the entire blade is laser cut from high-strength steel, you can trust that it will stay stable, flat, and true, even after prolonged use.

High-Density Carbide for Maximum Cutting Performance
This thin-kerf saw blade's 60 teeth are finished with tips made from Freud's application-specific TiCo high-density carbide "crosscut blend." Formulated to help the blade maintain a sharp cutting edge in the face of demanding crosscut applications, this blend is extra hard--due to including more high-density tungsten carbide than other TiCo blends--and it still offers the full mix of improved corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and impact resistance that you expect from TiCo.

With teeth that start out sharper and deliver improved edge retention, the blade can go longer between sharpening, and will hold up longer--saving you time and money.

Perma-SHIELD Coating Reduces Friction and Heat Buildup
Built to withstand tough use in less-than-ideal conditions, this blade is finished with Freud's red Perma-SHIELD--a non-stick coating that reduces friction and nearly eliminates the heat buildup that excess friction can cause. By providing complete thermal insulation, this coating protects your tools and your work surface. And it resists binding when the blade is used for large-volume cutting applications, which reduces blade warp.

As a lubricating feature, Perma-SHIELD allows the blade to spin freely while reducing stress on the motor and carriage of your saw. In addition, this coating helps prevent debris collection and resin or "pitch" buildup. Since gummy pitch buildup causes extra drag on the motor of your saw, less buildup is another little convenience that translates into longer tool life and longer blade life. It also means less downtime for blade cleaning, so you get jobs done faster.

This industrial saw blade is backed by Freud's limited lifetime warranty.

Ceramic Tile Saw Blades

Saw blades are used together with saws to cut different kinds of materials. Among the most common types of saw blades are diamond saw blades, jig saw blades and tile saw blades. Each type of saw blade is made of specific materials that make them fit to cut certain products.

Ceramic tile saw blades, unlike other types, are made of carbide-tipped blades. They are more expensive than normal blades that are made of steel and high-speed steel. These normal blades are used to cut woods.

8 1 4 Saw Blade

However, there is one particular type of saw that can be used to cut both wood and ceramic tiles called circular saws. It can also cut masonry and steel. Such saws are categorized by the diameter of their blades.

There are two available designs of circular saws. In-line saws are the normal circular saws. Its motor housing lies perpendicular to the blade. Meanwhile, worm drive saws have their motor housing positioned parallel with the saw blade.

In terms of power sources, there are also two kinds of circular saws. The cordless saw is applicable when working in areas where a power source is hardly accessible. Note, however, that when used to cut ceramic tiles, cordless circular saws use up battery power quickly. On the other hand, corded circular saws are more advisable when cutting ceramic tiles. Their usage tends to cost less, since they do not require much battery power.

When buying ceramic tile saw blades, it should be remembered that a major factor to look for is blade capacity. Blade capacity refers to the maximum depth a blade can cut through. If the blade is larger, it can cut deeper. Such blades are suitable for large ceramic tiles used for floor areas. However, if the saw blade will be used to cut only small ceramic tiles, it would be better to settle for smaller blades. Such blades are lighter and are easier to control.
